There used to be five to seven conservatories / greenhouses, which were heated.

the last of the greenhouses

When we arrived in 2002 to inspect Penttilä before buying it, I discovered the last remnants of a number of greenhouses or conservatories which once had stood on the south west slope in the back of the main house. They were constructed of wood and glass.. When the are not maintained, the wood will deteriorate - even in de dry south east Finnish climate.

I took this photograph in 2002. In 2010 the last part of the brick wall, underneath the remaining facade in the photo, fell down after ice had pushed is to its limits during the decades in which it was abandoned.

The chimney in the rear was for the heating building of the last green house. In 2006 it fell down, as the wooden beam on which it had its last foothold, gave way. With it the roof and part of the walls collapsed.
